ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA - Performances (7/25/06)

We got to hear some tracks by Supernova at the beginning... sounds very
classic rock, like the stuff Alice Cooper is aiming for now.

1. Lukas Rossi
"Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve
Boring. He's showing of a lot of style, but little or no substance. Poser.

2. Zayra Alvarez
"Call Me" by Blondie
Right... don't call us, we'll call you. She's starting to remind me of Bai
Ling from But Can They Sing. A waste, especially since we know from last
week she can do better than this.

3. Dana Andrews
"About A Girl" by Nirvana
Wow. That was impressive. This one might get the encore.

4. Patrice Pike
"Remedy" by The Black Crowes
Didn't seem like she got "into" the song. Too much smiling, like she was
trying to imitate Suzy. She looks a bit like Alanis Morrissette, and is
creeping me out just much.

5. Toby Rand
"White Wedding" by Billy Idol
Definitely not his best performance, despite what Jason said. Very forced.

6. Magni
"Heroes" by David Bowie
Seemed like his vocals were getting drowned out early on in the song, but it
was good. The band probably had a point about him just standing there
strapped to the guitar, but at least he was actually playing it (unlike
Lukas, I suspect).

7. Ryan Star
"I Alone" by Live
Okay, at first I thought he just went from trying to imitate JD to imitating
Marty Casey, but he actually pulled this off. Like Gilby said, "good job".

8. Jill Gioia (with Gilby Clarke on guitar)
"Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones
Vocals were okay. Performace was good, except when she started sodomizing
Gilby. Bit over the top, yeah.

9. Phil Ritchie
"One Headlight" by the Wallflowers
Right back to where he was before the breakthrough performance of last week.
He's in real danger this week.

10. Dilana
"Time after Time" by Cyndi Lauper
Er... whatever. Even the band was desperately trying to find great things
to say about this. The acoustic arrangement wasn't bad at all, just seemed
like pointless filler.

11. Josh Logan
"No Rain" by Blind Melon
I swear to god, every time I see this guy he looks like he's STONED. That
was just a lazy performance. Enough already. Supernova already has at
least one person with a serious drug problem.

12. Storm Large
"Anything Anything" by Dramarama
Fuck yeah! She's so far above and beyond the others right now it's not even
funny. You go Storm. Show them how it's done.

Bottom 3 at the end of the show:
Josh
Jill
Zayra

Who should go: Lukas
Who will go: Josh or Phil

Sadly, I can picture him fronting this band. He's also got a face I'd
like to punch.

Right... don't call us, we'll call you. She's starting to remind me of Bai

Whoa - this was easily the worst of the night. The girl has got to go.

Agree - in both her look and her singing she impressed me more than
before.

"Remedy" by The Black Crowes
Didn't seem like she got "into" the song. Too much smiling, like she was

Thought she did a nice job on vocals but that's about it.

5. Toby Rand
"White Wedding" by Billy Idol
Definitely not his best performance, despite what Jason said. Very forced.
Do we really need a resurgance of Billy Idolism? Lukas reminds me enuf
of him and now we have to listen to his songs as well?

"Heroes" by David Bowie
Seemed like his vocals were getting drowned out early on in the song, but it
was good. The band probably had a point about him just standing there

Another one I liked the vocals on. Don't know about his just standing
there - it didn't really phase me.

7. Ryan Star
"I Alone" by Live
Okay, at first I thought he just went from trying to imitate JD to imitating
Marty Casey, but he actually pulled this off. Like Gilby said, "good job".
I was worried at first but he did a pretty good job. "Live" is one of
my favorite bands.
Post by The Sentinel
8. Jill Gioia (with Gilby Clarke on guitar)
"Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones
Vocals were okay. Performace was good, except when she started sodomizing
Gilby. Bit over the top, yeah.
I'm surprised he "complained". I figured a guy would like that stuff.
Her vocals weren't bad on this one.
Post by The Sentinel
9. Phil Ritchie
"One Headlight" by the Wallflowers
Right back to where he was before the breakthrough performance of last week.
He's in real danger this week.
I don't like watching him - he's very quirky and I don't think he's
right for SuperNova.

"Time after Time" by Cyndi Lauper
Er... whatever. Even the band was desperately trying to find great things
to say about this. The acoustic arrangement wasn't bad at all, just seemed

I totally disagree. If I get nothing else from this show I have gained

"No Rain" by Blind Melon
I swear to god, every time I see this guy he looks like he's STONED. That
was just a lazy performance. Enough already. Supernova already has at
least one person with a serious drug problem.
The vocals were pleasant but I don't think that's what SuperNova are
looking for.
Post by The Sentinel
12. Storm Large
"Anything Anything" by Dramarama
Fuck yeah! She's so far above and beyond the others right now it's not even
funny. You go Storm. Show them how it's done.
She definately kicked butt on this one. Her whole physique seemed
buffed and blown out while she was singing. Good job.

Agreed, but barring that, I'll second the pitch to toss Zayra. I
missed last week, but the three times I have seen her 'sing' have been
awful. The others may have their problems, but most of them can at
least carry a tune. Little miss lycra pants has absolutely a horrid
voice. Way pitchy. I can't imagine anyone thinking she should make a
living as a professional singer.

From what I heard of the original Supernova music they showcased, it
appears to have a radio mainstream sound. It wasn't as hard rocking as I
thought it would be. I'll have more opinion on Supernova's music as I
hear more & the lyrics are filtered in. Hard to tell now.

Lukas - Symphony of Destruction
I was not feeling that song. It was like his voice was too strained or
something and he was garbling the words. This was his worst for me so
far. He's not one of my faves. He has the image - Again, not original,
but good for the right now because he would fit in with what's out
there, but he has a long way to go.

Zayta - Call Me
That outfit was smokin'! That's the only thing that saved her. They were
diplomatic about her performance, but I think they know she's not going
to make it. When we know that too, it's time to cut her loose. I was
wondering how she made it into the final 15 to begin with. =A0

Dana - About a Girl
This was the best performance of a Nirvana song so far. Now put the rest
of the catalog to rest! The thing with her and this song though, is it
is more of a toned down song that you don't have to stretch too far to
make it your own. I like the way her voice sounded on this one. That's
what made it for me. She still looked the same, just with darker eye
makeup & that will only take you so far. =A0

Patrice-Remedy
Hated this one. Her version of it did not do the original song justice.
=A0

Toby- White Wedding
This is such a karaoke type song to me. You can have fun with it. He'll
be around for awhile yet.

Magni- Heroes
Didn't like this one. He has a cockiness to him I think. Wasn't a good
song for him. I would commend him for his cockiness if he was
consistent.

Ryan- I Alone
Great song! Nothing spectacular from his rendition. Maybe he needs to
cut loose a little more?
=A0
Jill- Brown Sugar
UGH She tried to be Courtney Love & now we know she's no Mick Jagger
either. I'd like to see her do a song she kills. Sing it, not scream it.
=A0
Phil- One Headlight
Really like him. The vocals were boring. Not a good pick for him. Don't
see him leaving yet though.
=A0
Dilana - Time After Time
This was actually my favorite song of hers so far. I knew she had a
softer, natural voice in there. It's cool how she can switch her voice
between the two extremes. That should be a plus that carries her
through. =A0

Josh- No Rain
I like Josh. He could have done a better job with this though. If you're
doing a Blind Melon song you have to channel Shannon Hoon's energy and
craziness or it just ain't gonna work.

Storm- Anything Anything
This was my favorite song of the night. Dana's was my 2nd & Dilana's was
my 3rd favorite. The original Anything Anything is a great song. They
showcased this band on VH-1's Bands Reunited. Super cool pick. Didn't
expect that.

Z has got to go! This episode was kind of boring. They all need to kick
it up more and more each week. The girls are really standing out.

People, they will not pick a female to front their band, they are doing
this just to be politically correct. Lukas or Toby are gonna be the two
finalists, the woman are there for the eye candy, thats it.

I have to agree. After her previous performances, last night was a "teaser"
of sorts. Each time she would get to a certain part of the song and just
*almost* cut loose, then she would pull you back down to softness again. I
can't stop watching her. She is so diverse, keeps you guessing what is
coming next!

Anyone check out her bio? One helluva resume, quite successful in her
native country.

"Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve
Same old shit, different week. The guy is legitimately awful and I'm
actually really starting to wonder why they don't just come out and admit

he flat-out cannot sing. He was just speaking lines towards the end, not
singing at all.

I liked it, but I was shocked they did. After saving her ass last week I
figured they'd give her hell for not doing a massive rocking song. Glad
they seem to be warming up to her a bit. She's still not going to win, but
I'm glad she's not going anywhere this week.

"Remedy" by The Black Crowes
I like her, but they were right about her this week. Same thing, week in
and week out. She doesn't seem capable of getting out of her mold at all.
I'm sure she's successful with it, and what she said to Navarro was dead
right, but she's on national television and we, the audience, want to see
her do more.
Post by The Sentinel
5. Toby Rand
"White Wedding" by Billy Idol
Toby is the only person left in the competition that I can "take or leave".
He's not bad, he's not good. He's just there. This performance continued
that trend. There was nothing wrong with it, but in the face of some of the
other performances of the night, it just didn't hold up.
Post by The Sentinel
6. Magni
"Heroes" by David Bowie
I was surprised he didn't "rock out" a bit more to it (there's several cues
where he could have done so), but he continues to grow on me. Of all the
males this year he's the guy who has both stage presence AND a voice. That
alone makes him worth keeping around for a while. The performance was okay.
Post by The Sentinel
7. Ryan Star
"I Alone" by Live
I still don't like him, but all things considered I thought he did okay with
this. Definitely not enough to make up for last week though.
Post by The Sentinel
8. Jill Gioia (with Gilby Clarke on guitar)
"Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones
She's cool, but she's wearing out her welcome I think. She's not a "threat"
to win and I think I'm getting tired of her. She's kind of the Toby of the
female side...she's okay but she's nothing special. We know she can rock it
though when she wants to, I just wish she'd do it more. The really bad
thing is, she gave a bunch of testerone monkeys a vision of how they'll look
if they let a woman win, lowering the stock of deserving contenders Dilana
and Storm.

9. Phil Ritchie
"One Headlight" by the Wallflowers
I hate this song, I despise him as a performer and this was terrible.
Post by The Sentinel
10. Dilana
"Time after Time" by Cyndi Lauper
I love Dilana, she's the best in the competition. Unfortunately for her she
likes to take risks. Normally this is great, but both times she's really
done so now (Ring of Fire and this performance) I've not really enjoyed it.
It isn't that she can't do them competently because she can, but I just
don't see why she feels the need to do so. Maybe she isn't quite as aware
of her position in this competition (top 2 at the very least) and thinks she
has to do off-the-wall performances. I don't know. Either way, she's not
going anywhere.
Post by The Sentinel
11. Josh Logan

God, this was just bad. After turning "Come As You Are" into a ballad I

"Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve
Boring. He's showing of a lot of style, but little or no substance. Poser.
Seems to me like he's coasting. He's safe until the final 5 or 6, and
he's singing like he knows it. To stick around, he will need to kick
it into a higher gear, and for his sake, he better not do it too late.

2. Zayra Alvarez
"Call Me" by Blondie
Right... don't call us, we'll call you. She's starting to remind me of Bai
Ling from But Can They Sing. A waste, especially since we know from last
week she can do better than this.
Loved the crack about the solo career. She's fun to have on the show,
though, so I don't expect to see her go. Not yet. The writing's on
the wall, though.

Oh yeah, there was nothing to like about this performance, except that
it ended.
Post by The Sentinel
3. Dana Andrews
"About A Girl" by Nirvana
Wow. That was impressive. This one might get the encore.
Who was this, and what happened to the Dana Andrews on the show before?
She's my vote for the encore. She could end up being this year's
Suzie McNeil if she keeps this up.

4. Patrice Pike
"Remedy" by The Black Crowes
Didn't seem like she got "into" the song. Too much smiling, like she was
trying to imitate Suzy. She looks a bit like Alanis Morrissette, and is
creeping me out just much.
I still like her, but I'm waiting for her to really impress me. This
was an OK performance, but nothing special.

5. Toby Rand
"White Wedding" by Billy Idol
Definitely not his best performance, despite what Jason said. Very forced.
Another OK performance, but not great. He can easily do better.

"Heroes" by David Bowie
Seemed like his vocals were getting drowned out early on in the song, but it
was good. The band probably had a point about him just standing there
strapped to the guitar, but at least he was actually playing it (unlike
Lukas, I suspect).
I'm digging Magni. I gotta say, I never really cared for this song,
and I don't think it's well suited for this competition. His vocals
were spot on, though.

"I Alone" by Live
Okay, at first I thought he just went from trying to imitate JD to imitating
Marty Casey, but he actually pulled this off. Like Gilby said, "good job".
Yet another "OK" performance.

8. Jill Gioia (with Gilby Clarke on guitar)
"Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones
Vocals were okay. Performace was good, except when she started sodomizing
Gilby. Bit over the top, yeah.
Extremely over the top. Better than last week, but I'm just not buying
her act.

9. Phil Ritchie
"One Headlight" by the Wallflowers
Right back to where he was before the breakthrough performance of last week.
He's in real danger this week.
I never liked this song, and Phil's renditition did nothing to change
my mind. He's gotta lose the Tom Green bobblehead look. Oh, and he
needs to work on his vocals too.
Post by The Sentinel
10. Dilana
"Time after Time" by Cyndi Lauper
Er... whatever. Even the band was desperately trying to find great things
to say about this. The acoustic arrangement wasn't bad at all, just seemed
like pointless filler.
Yawn. But it's Dilana, so she's safe. She can put it in neutral until
the last few shows if she wants.

"No Rain" by Blind Melon
I swear to god, every time I see this guy he looks like he's STONED. That
was just a lazy performance. Enough already. Supernova already has at
least one person with a serious drug problem.
Horrible job, lousy vocals and the arrangement was terrible. He has
the stage presence of, well, me, if I ever stepped on the karaoke
stage.

Fuck yeah! She's so far above and beyond the others right now it's not even
funny. You go Storm. Show them how it's done.
Showing again tonight that she has all the tools. I'd rather she
didn't do the stage dive until later in the competition, though. It's
too early to be pulling gimicks like that.
Post by The Sentinel

Not a chance. The band is in love with him, or the producers want us
to think so.

Who will go: Josh or Phil
And I could not argue with either of them leaving.

Dana should get the encore.

Based on tonight's performance, Dana has moved up in my eyes and
Patrice has fallen slightly. Last week, I though Phil jumped a few
spots, but this week, he lost them just as quickly.

For what it's worth, here are my totally worthless rankings, based
partly on how I feel personally, and how I think the show will unfold,
given what we've seen so far:

Top 5 (in no particular order)
Dilana, Magni, Lukas, Storm, Toby

Middle of the pack (again, no particular order)
Dana, Ryan, Partice

In serious trouble (you know the drill)
Phil, Josh, Zayra, Jill

It might be cliche and overused, but I was surprised to hear the
criticism come from the grindee. I think the criticism caught Jill by
surprise, too, if only because a lot of female contestants have been
praised for interacting with the band, and "interacting" generally
means "acting like a stripper."

I think the short skirt made it seem sleazier than usual. If it really
was a surprise to her that she'd be performing with Gilby, she can't
really be blamed for the wardrobe choice.

When it comes time for Tommy to sit in, it's probably a good thing that
he'll be stuck behind the drum kit. If somebody grinds on him, he'll
grind right back, and the whole thing might have to be moved to
pay-per-view.

Her voice might not fit with their style, which is why it would be a
brave choice - there would be some risk involved. There are at least a
half-dozen singers here who would do a competent job on the record, and
be counted on not to ruin it. Dilana + Supernova might be a disaster,
but it's also the best chance of creating something that won't be in
the bargain bins three months after release.

It's kind of like the difference between having a steady quarterback
who doesn't turn the ball over, doesn't lose games for you, and having
a quarterback who tries to do the spectacular, with the results being a
lot more unpredictable. Dilana is Michael Vick, in a contest full of
Trent Dilfers.

"Time after Time" by Cyndi Lauper
Er... whatever. Even the band was desperately trying to find great things
to say about this. The acoustic arrangement wasn't bad at all, just seemed
like pointless filler.
Very nice performance. If there's any room left on the bandwagon, I
may be ready to jump on. I'm still not 100% sold on her - she has a
distinctive voice, but I'm not sure I'd want to listen to it for an
hour. She would be the bravest choice for the band - a sign that they
want to do more than just release a generic hard rock album to fulfill
their contractual obligation.
Anyone else singing this would have been heavily criticized, but
they're completely under her spell. Girl is gonna have a big-selling
album when this is over, with or without Supernova.

I think I already saw her on House momentarily, as she was sucked into
the MRI machine from a mile away.

"No Rain" by Blind Melon
I swear to god, every time I see this guy he looks like he's STONED. That
was just a lazy performance. Enough already. Supernova already has at
least one person with a serious drug problem.
Not bad, but he all but admitted that he has no intention of changing
his style to fit the band. I think some, if not all, of the
contestants were chosen before the producers knew who the band was
going to be. I'm not sure if the likes of Josh and Zayra would have
even tried out if they knew what kind of band they were trying out for.
Another guy wasting network pixels on this show.

12. Storm Large
"Anything Anything" by Dramarama
Fuck yeah! She's so far above and beyond the others right now it's not even
funny. You go Storm. Show them how it's done.
I can't really put my finger on it, but she seems to me more like
somebody playing a rock star in a made-for-TV movie, than an actual
rock star. Like, if there was a band playing at spring break, before
the sharks started attacking, she would have been in that band. If
they want to go with a sexpot, I'd prefer Jill; I guess I'm in the
minority there.
Naw, I'm right with you on this. She seems like a fun girl, I gather
she and Dilana are kind of the axis of hard-ass chicks, only it's
slightly more obviously synthetic with Storm Large. Can't wait for
her to wear the X-Men uniform and sing in a hurricane.
Post by s***@altavista.com
I'd be surprised, and disappointed, if anybody other than Zayra or Josh
went.
Those two, and Ryan, all three, and next week's show would be markedly
improved. And Patrice, Dana, and Lukas. Wake me when it's September.

OK, that's unfair. All the remaining contestants can put on an
entertaining and more than competent performance, and it's worth
tuning in just to see them struggle.

5. Toby Rand
"White Wedding" by Billy Idol
Definitely not his best performance, despite what Jason said. Very forced.
After declaring him the favorite, I expected more from him. The band
still seems to be impressed, so he should have plenty of time to raise
his game a notch before he's in any danger.
I thought it was outstanding. Didn't Lukas sing this a week or two
ago? I really doubted when I saw the title, but dawg, he made it his
own! Oops.
Is it my imagination, or are we hearing a lot more repetition of songs
this year? I thought they'd be able to secure the rights (or whatever
the legal term is) to do more songs, after establishing that they're
more than just a glorified karaoke contest, but that doesn't seem to be
the case. We're getting the same classic rock tunes as last year; the
only new songs we're hearing are, well, new songs.

I think the key is to establish your hard-rocking credentials first,
then you can get away with this sort of thing. The guy who got the
boot in the first week made the mistake of doing Duran Duran before he
showed that he could do anything other than Duran Duran. Jenny dug a
hole she couldn't get out of by starting out soft, and Josh and Ryan
are in a similar spot now. Compare that to last year's Marty, who got
to the point where he could get praised for doing a Britney Spears
song.

I just watched the history of metal thing they showed on VH1, and they
talked about a similar dynamic with the late-80s hair bands. The
ballad was always the second single - they showed that they could rock
on the first single, then they could wuss out on the second one.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with what I'm talking about, but
I'm reminded of what Beavis and Butthead said was the difference
between David Lee Roth and Vince Neil: David Lee Roth acts like a wuss,
Vince Neil IS a wuss.

"Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones
Excellent energy. I'm not sure how much credit for that goes to her,
and how much goes to Gilby. I'm also not sure if I should pity him or
envy him for reaching a point in his life where he's bored by having a
hot chick grind on him.
I think Gilby's wife was probably watching, either from home or from
backstage. He HAD to tell Jill to behave herself then and there.

How true, and this "question of commitment" on elimination night
suggests that Supernova is taking that into consideration. Of course,
that doesn't explain why Zayra is still on board. She's the first
contestant this season to survive two bottom-three showings. She'd
better have more spandex outfits on hand.

Oh piffle, the logic and consistency of the comments from Supernova
make feathers look heavy.

They take the guys seriously and are tough on them, the girls are
given lots of extra points, though it's almost inconceivable they'd
chose a female lead singer.

Maybe it wouldn't have worked last year, but just maybe, since the
band itself is synthetic, it would work if they'd just go on tour with
a rotating five or ten leads a la AI.

We got to hear some tracks by Supernova at the beginning... sounds very classic rock, like the stuff Alice Cooper is aiming for
now.
1. Lukas Rossi
"Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve
Boring. He's showing of a lot of style, but little or no substance. Poser.
2. Zayra Alvarez
"Call Me" by Blondie
Right... don't call us, we'll call you. She's starting to remind me of Bai Ling from But Can They Sing. A waste, especially
since we know from last week she can do better than this.
3. Dana Andrews
"About A Girl" by Nirvana
Wow. That was impressive. This one might get the encore.
4. Patrice Pike
"Remedy" by The Black Crowes
Didn't seem like she got "into" the song. Too much smiling, like she was trying to imitate Suzy. She looks a bit like Alanis
Morrissette, and is creeping me out just much.
5. Toby Rand
"White Wedding" by Billy Idol
Definitely not his best performance, despite what Jason said. Very forced.
6. Magni
"Heroes" by David Bowie
Seemed like his vocals were getting drowned out early on in the song, but it was good. The band probably had a point about him
just standing there strapped to the guitar, but at least he was actually playing it (unlike Lukas, I suspect).
7. Ryan Star
"I Alone" by Live
Okay, at first I thought he just went from trying to imitate JD to imitating Marty Casey, but he actually pulled this off. Like
Gilby said, "good job".
8. Jill Gioia (with Gilby Clarke on guitar)
"Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones
Vocals were okay. Performace was good, except when she started sodomizing Gilby. Bit over the top, yeah.
9. Phil Ritchie
"One Headlight" by the Wallflowers
Right back to where he was before the breakthrough performance of last week. He's in real danger this week.

Pathetic. They just sent Phil home instead of that lame

Well now it will have to be Bjork, uh - I mean Zayra that's gone next

If it was based solely on talent, Zayra would have been gone a long
time ago. But let's face it, her antics make for compelling
television, in a train-wreck sort of way. They'll keep her around a
while longer, while the field thins. It's gotta suck for the folks
sent off before her, though, since they must know there is no way that
Zayra is being seriously considered.

Yeah, this pattern is typical of so many 'reality' competition shows -
keep the bizarre / aggravating / freakish character(s) around as long
as possible - even though their is no way they are going to win. You
can see this in everything from Project Runway to Top Chef.

I suppose some stooge did a marketing analysis years ago that insisted
that people actually wanted to see freaks more than talent in these
situations so thats why all these shows keep on doing this.

Say what you will, but Zayra is a better *performer* than Phil. She
definitely does hold your attention.

The other difference is that Zayra has consistently managed to step up
with her 'Bottom Three' performances. (If she'd just manage to do that
*every* time, rather than just on Wednesdays, we wouldn't be having this
conversation.)

Phil really hit it with that _Damage_(?) song.

But that performance just confirmed what already knew - this guy didn't
want to front _Supernova_. He wants to front _The Killers_. So let him.

That's what they let him go.
And, ultimately, they made the right call.

Ian (And, next week, I'd be tempted to dump Josh before Zayra there
too. The week after, *then* they can finally unload Zayra...)
