ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA Performances (7/18/06)

1. Patrice Pike
"Helter Skelter" by the Beatles
It was very striking to me that neither I nor anybody in the room I was with
could recall anything about her previous performances. She does a very
competent job, but she doesn't stand out, in a good or bad way. I can tell
she was trying stand out to here, but still no "wow".

2. Josh Logan
"Come As You Are" by Nirvana
I still remember his performance was great the first week. This week he was
more consistent than last week, and like Patrice all I can say is it was
competent. The difference is I get the impression he's deliberately laying
low to wait out the competition, since it's highly likely he's safe (for
now) and he knows it.

3. Storm Large
"Just What I Needed" by The Cars
Not her best peformance, but she was told to tone it down (most likely by
the producers). Still rocked, and I'll be buying whatever album she's on
after this show's over. (Oh, and I already googled her, the first week.)

4. Lukas Rossi
"Let's Spend the Night Together" by the Rolling Stones
That was pretty bad, even for him. Even though I could hear his voice
through the whole song this time, I didn't understand a word of it. Raising
the bar my ass. He is so one-note.

5. Jill Gioia
"All Right Now" by Free (not Creed)
Competent, again. Still have a bad taste in my mouth from her last week's
performance, though.

6. Ryan Star
"Fortunate Son" by Creedance Clearwater Revival
He was really straining his voice on this one, and it was painfully obvious
he's not used to singing like that. I think I might like it a lot better if
I listened to it again with out watching him. I still think he's trying to
impersonate J.D. Fortune, and not doing a convincing job of it at all.

7. Phil Ritchie
"White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane
That rocked. He's obvious gotten some good coaching, and I wonder if
they're setting him up to be this year's Marty Casey?

For the first time, the rest of Supernova is actually starting to feel like
a real band, with the excited banter between them after Jason performed with
auditioner. Still not convinced it's real, though... certainly not as
genuine as INXS.

8. Dana Andrews
"It's My Life" by Bongiovi
Was she trying to sound like Bon Jovi or Shania Twain? Either way, her
vocals didn't cut it. She just couldn't sustain the big notes and stay on
pitch. Bottom three this week.

9. Toby Rand
"Runway Train" by Soul Asylum
Good ending, but everything before that was boringly average and ho-hum and
didn't really express the emotion he said he was aiming to show us.

10. Magni
"Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots
Another solid performance. Say what you want, he is definitely on par with
the final three from last season.

11. Zayra Alvarez
"Everybody Hurts" by REM
Her accent felt really affected when she was singing the verse. The ending
validated the Bjork comparisons, although she still has a long, long way to
go before she's anything more than potential Bjork (or very early Bjork, at
best).
Call me crazy, but I actually think it'd be cool if they taught her how to
sing and she ended up with the gig. Now *that* would make for interesting
reality tv. Which of course means it'd never happen.

12. Jenny Galt
"Drive" by Incubus
At times she reminds me of the singer Poe, but then that shaky vibrato sets
in, and I'm like ummmm.... I actually digged that Lilith Fair music, but
she's definitely landed herself in the bottom three this week.

13. Dilana
"Zombie" by the Cranberries
If my sister is anything to go by, Cranberries' fans will hate this version
of their song as much as Johnny Cash's hated last week's. It definitely
fits with type of music the members of Supernova do, though.
Unless I was right about her being this year's Jordis, I think they may have
tipped their hand already.

So far this season feels a lot more like American Idol than last year did.
The producer control feels a lot more overt, and a number of singers seem
like pale imitations of last year's (and a few others, oddly, like SNL cast
members).

Who should go this week: Lukas (but he's safe).
Who will go this week: Toss up between Jenny and Dana.

I liked the vocals, but Dave was dead on about the performance. I like
her, but not enough yet to consider her a front runner.

This, like all his other performances, did nothing for me. He is
entirely forgetable. Except for his smirk. Dude, you can't smirk when
you're singing Nirvana.

I liked this. She has all the tools to make it all the way through.
Warning: If you do google her, some of what you may find will be
unsafe for work.

Again, his vocals weren't great, but his onstage presence was on. The
band loves him, so wether you think he deserves it or not, I see him in
the top five. In the mansion show, he said he has some vocal talents
he hasn't shown us yet, so I'm hoping to see them.

5. Jill Gioia
"All Right Now" by Free (not Creed)
Competent, again. Still have a bad taste in my mouth from her last week's
performance, though.
First off, let me say I'm a huge Paul Rodgers fan. Second, I think his
stuff with Free is classic. That said, I really disliked Jill's
performance. I know I'm comparing her to one of my favourites, but
it's more than that. She seemed to be out of sync with the song on a
few ocassions. I thought she might have the voice to carry that song,
but I was wrong. Very dissapointing.

He was really straining his voice on this one, and it was painfully obvious
he's not used to singing like that. I think I might like it a lot better if
I listened to it again with out watching him. I still think he's trying to

Bored now. He's gotta pull a killer performance out of thin air for me
to change my mind about him. He's not the first I'd cut, but he's on
the list.

7. Phil Ritchie
"White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane
That rocked. He's obvious gotten some good coaching, and I wonder if
they're setting him up to be this year's Marty Casey?
Wow. He really impressed me this week. Gone was the Tom Green Bobble
Head and in was a good rock performance. He's jumped substantially in
my ratings, where I had him pegged as soon to go after last week.

8. Dana Andrews
"It's My Life" by Bongiovi
Was she trying to sound like Bon Jovi or Shania Twain? Either way, her
vocals didn't cut it. She just couldn't sustain the big notes and stay on
pitch. Bottom three this week.
She's in trouble, and I don't think there's a way for her to save
herself. She looks great, she sounds great, but she's missing the
intangibles. If this were a pop contest, she'd be cleaning house. I
think she could have a good chance in another genre, just not hard
rock.

9. Toby Rand
"Runway Train" by Soul Asylum
Good ending, but everything before that was boringly average and ho-hum and

This didn't grab me the way last week's performance did. I was nodding
off with Dave. Only the REM song would have been worse for him to sing
this week. He's safe, though, so he can afford a lack luster
performance.
Post by The Sentinel
10. Magni
"Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots
Another solid performance. Say what you want, he is definitely on par with

Really, really good. I'm liking this guy more and more each time. If
the band listens to me, they will make him the encore this week.

She can sing, no doubt about that. And she brings a certain je ne sais
quoi to the show. But there's no way the band is choosing her. The
Celine comment should have been reserved for her. I could see her
doing theater, easily, or playing Vegas, but not fronting a hard rock
band.

I was doing a sudoku when she started, and hardly looked up from it. I
like her, she has a good look and a nice voice, but the song did
nothing for me, and her performance was blase.

It was OK, but maybe I'm not in love with it because I like the
original. I, too, see her in a Jordis type role this year. She has
the energy and personality that Jordis lacked, though. Maybe I'm
crazy, but her range seems limitted. And she seems a little too goth
in the first three weeks. I see her in the top five, easily, and maybe
all the way to the end.

My bottom three are Jill, Jenny and Ryan. I suspect the fan voting
will put Dana in the bottom three, though. My pick for encore this
week is Magni.

I thought he was terrible. His crooked smirk/smile was very off-putting. OK

I thought last week's show was so bad that I didn't even feel like
commenting on it. I hated pretty much every performance and just wanted to
forget about it. Jill redeemed herself a bit with a good performance of
"Bring Me to Life" the next night, but I wanted better this week. For the
most part I got it.

As an aside, am I the only getting seriously skeeved out by Tommy Lee? The
constant allusions to wanting to bang the women is starting to come off less
like a "I'm a naughty rock star" and more like a "I'm a perverted old
bastard that's going to rape you in your sleep". They need to tell him to
tone that shit down or it's going to reach the point where one of the
deserving women (especially Dilana) is going to lose the competition because
Gilby and Newsted don't want a lawsuit on their hands after she gets tired
of Tommy Lee harassing her during their tour.

Anyway, on to my thoughts:

1. Patrice Pike
"Helter Skelter" by the Beatles

I like her. She doesn't stand out as much as some of the others, but she's
got good presence. She just doesn't seem to stand out above the crowd of
other good singers. This performance was no exception.

2. Josh Logan
"Come As You Are" by Nirvana

I hated this. Hated it. Turning "Come As You Are" into a ballad should be
a criminal offense.

3. Storm Large
"Just What I Needed" by The Cars

I still love her name. She rocks too. She did fine with this.

4. Lukas Rossi
"Let's Spend the Night Together" by the Rolling Stones

I've been on the fence about this guy, but this tipped the scales...I hate
him. He's got enourmous stage presence but he's a horrible singer. And not
in a "heavy metal" fashion -- he just sucks. He's truly awful at it and
needs to get a voice coach. Axl Rose, James Hetfield and Vince Neil are all
capable singers, even if they are rockers. Lukas isn't.

5. Jill Gioia
"All Right Now" by Free (not Creed)

She was good this week. That whole (no pun intended) Courtney Love thing
was a disaster but she seems to have accepted it and dealt with it.

6. Ryan Star
"Fortunate Son" by Creedance Clearwater Revival

Despised it. He needs to go soon.

7. Phil Ritchie
"White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane

Hated it beyond belief. Newsted was cool, but this guy is wooden and
completely unbelieveable on the stage. He does absolutely nothing for me,
and this performance didn't change my opinion of him.

8. Dana Andrews
"It's My Life" by Bon Jovi

She has an amazing voice but she's completely out of her element with these
guys. She needs to learn to play the guitar (if she can't) and audition for
Nashville Star -- she'd be huge in the Music Row scene. But she needs to
stop trying to fit in with these guys, she just doesn't.

9. Toby Rand
"Runway Train" by Soul Asylum

I think I like this guy, but I hate this song. He did the best he could
with it, but it's a boring, preachy annoying song. Not much you can do to
make it better.

10. Magni
"Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots

Magni gets better every week, this was his best performance yet. I'm
starting to dig him.

11. Zayra Alvarez
"Everybody Hurts" by REM

She didn't do a bad job on this song, but she's still (like Dana) completely
out of her element here. And yeah, the Bjorkishness was insufferable. She
needs to go home.

12. Jenny Galt
"Drive" by Incubus

I'm tired of her. She tries hard, she has a good voice, but she's utterly
bland. Bland in the extreme.

13. Dilana
"Zombie" by the Cranberries

She's great and easily my favorite on the competition, even though I didn't
like her rendition of "Ring of Fire" last week. She's showing that she can
sing damn near anything AND has stage presence, unlike a certain grunting
fool that thinks he's god's gift to music. This performance was awesome.

Who should go this week: Josh (but he's also safe)
Who will go this week: Dana, they've given her enough chances to match their
style

She's my favorite as well. So far I've enjoyed all of her performances. I
was barely paying attention to most of the other singers this week. But she
has the ability to focus my attention. Unlike (most of) the other
performers, if she wins I think people would actually pay to see and hear
her sing.

I may possibly be more worried about Tommy, than I am about Dilana!
That girl looks like she was ridden hard and put up wet.
I love her though.

What creeps me out is how Tommy responds to any question
by turning and peering up at the balcony people and posing.
Verrrry disturbing.

And, yet, this was his best performance to date. I almost forgot his
resemblance to that older brother on "Even Stevens" last night. ;)

"White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane
That rocked. He's obvious gotten some good coaching, and I wonder if
they're setting him up to be this year's Marty Casey?
I still, still think this guy's in the wrong competition - he doesn't
want to front a hard rock band, he wants to front a punk-y garage-type
band.

"It's My Life" by Bongiovi
Was she trying to sound like Bon Jovi or Shania Twain? Either way, her
vocals didn't cut it. She just couldn't sustain the big notes and stay on
pitch. Bottom three this week.
Very disappointing after last week. I hope she sticks around (and I
think the band will make every attempt to save her for a while, if for
no other reason that she's young and cute (and Tommy's probably hot for
her)), because I want to see how much she's capable of improving.

But she's going to have to do better than that if she wants to stick
around.

"Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots
Another solid performance. Say what you want, he is definitely on par with
the final three from last season.
I am now comfortable in saying that Magni is my second favorite after
Dilana. The guy *consistently* takes every rock classic given to him,
and sings it just right - close enough to the original that you don't
say "What the heck was that?!" (see: Zayra), but enough of his own that
you can see he's not just a mimic.

I'm pullin' for Magni to make it to the end... :)

"Everybody Hurts" by REM
Her accent felt really affected when she was singing the verse.
I hate this song. And I'm really getting sick of her "interpretations".

If there's any justice, she'll be going this week, despite whatever
Dave's positive comments about her were.
Post by The Sentinel
12. Jenny Galt
"Drive" by Incubus
At times she reminds me of the singer Poe...
Despite the fact that she's from Vancouver, and I want to like her, I
find Jenny to be bland, bland, bland in a way that even the much
criticized Dana isn't. (I guess I find Patrice to be similarly bland.)

If Zayra can't go this week, I'll be quite satisfied if it's Jenny to
leave.
Post by The Sentinel
13. Dilana
"Zombie" by the Cranberries
If my sister is anything to go by, Cranberries' fans will hate this version
of their song as much as Johnny Cash's hated last week's. It definitely
fits with type of music the members of Supernova do, though.
She is simply the best there. This performance was outstanding. She gave
Dolores O'Riordan a run for her money.

Despite the fact that I think she'd be a better fit with a 'gothier'
rock outfit, she'd be my pick to front this band if it were up to me
(with Magni being the runner-up, right now).
Post by The Sentinel
Who should go this week: Lukas (but he's safe).
Totally disagree. He's one of the best there. He should definitely be
here for a while.
Post by The Sentinel
Who will go this week: Toss up between Jenny and Dana.
While Dana will probably be in the bottom 3, there's no way the guys
will let her go yet.

Jenny seems quite likely to leave. And, like I said above - I won't
really miss her.
(Who was the 3rd person in the bottom 3? It was one of the guys, right?
Was it Toby or Ryan?...)

I'm actually amazed that a lot of you can remember who sang what song
week after week because for me, once the performance is done, I find a
lot of them pretty forgettable. Dilana is my absolute favorite. She is
the only one of the group that I would buy a CD of - with or without
Supernova. The only other performances that struck me one way or the
other last night were:

Patrice Pike -"Helter Skelter" by the Beatles - The Beatles are my
absolute favorite band EVER so I was cringing thinking of any of these
people singing it.....I thought she did a pretty good job with it

Storm Large - she's trying too hard to look like tough rock chick and
her face reminds me of Lisa Hartman. And her name sounds made up for a
soap opera....."As The World Churns" !

Lukas Rossi - I am breaking my rule of not judging someone by their
looks....he creeps me out.

Dana Andrews - It's My Life" by Bon Jovi - whoa, was she bad on this -
she needs to be punished.

Magni - "Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots - if I remember correctly I
think I actually liked this one.

Zayra Alvarez - "Everybody Hurts" by REM - REM is second only to the
Beatles for me and I was cringing at the thought of her singing this.
But I have to say she actually did a fairly decent job of it. I think
this type of song suits her.

Dilana -"Zombie" by the Cranberries....I like the original by the
Cranberries and think Dilana did this justice. She is the one to beat,
IMO.

I've been a fan, but this was kind of a yawner. After all the drama
over who would get to sing this song, I expected more from her.

I guess he's got some talent, but I just can't see this guy fronting
this band. He seems more like the sensitive solo artist type.

3. Storm Large
"Just What I Needed" by The Cars
Not her best peformance, but she was told to tone it down (most likely by
the producers). Still rocked, and I'll be buying whatever album she's on
after this show's over. (Oh, and I already googled her, the first week.)
She sings well, she looks good, but I still think she's too cutesy for
this gig. She has moved up a bit in my estimation, if only because
nobody really wowed me tonight.

"Let's Spend the Night Together" by the Rolling Stones
That was pretty bad, even for him. Even though I could hear his voice
through the whole song this time, I didn't understand a word of it. Raising
the bar my ass. He is so one-note.
I remember hearing about how the Stones had to change the lyrics to
"let's spend some time together" to get past the censors on the "Ed
Sullivan Show." Lukas wouldn't have had that problem, because the
censors wouldn't have been able to understand what the hell he was
singing. The way the band gushed over him, he's probably the encore,
but I still don't get it. All style, no substance.

Okay, but not up to the standard of her perfomance on last week's

on not forgetting the words that she forgot to put on a show, but she
sounded pretty good.

She's taken the same "belt it out" approach to every song, and it
didn't work as well this week. I disagree with the band about her

Her accent felt really affected when she was singing the verse. The ending
validated the Bjork comparisons, although she still has a long, long way to

performance might have been enough to save her for another week, but I
hope not.

I think she wants to be Aimee Mann when she grows up. There's nothing
wrong with that, but it's not going to put her in this band. Maybe
next year they can do "Rock Star: Til Tuesday." Probably not.

Unless I was right about her being this year's Jordis, I think they may have
tipped their hand already.
Kind of the opposite of Jill's performance - she was so intent on
maintaining her crazy/scary persona that I thought she lost the tune a
couple times. The vocal performance on the original version of this
song is so strong that she was bound to pale in comparison, but she
still has the band (and most of the posters here) under her spell.

***** SPOILERS *****

I reserve the right to change my mind from week to week! LOL.

Jenny, Dana & Josh were my bottom 3 picks.

Did the keyboard player have a "Hydro" shirt on?

Patrice - Helter Skelter
Reminded me of Linda Perry (think that's her name) in 4 Non Blondes.
Mediocre to kick off the show. Her voice doesn't have much range to me.
One of the things that always stands out to help me make an assessment.

Josh - Come As You Are
I wish they would pull Nirvana from the choice list already! None of
them will be able to pull off a Kurt Cobain vocal & emotion so why
bother. His verses were way too whiny & the whole singing from the side
of the mouth drove me crazy.

Storm - Just What I Needed
Perfect example of playing up the sexuality. In this case it was
probably a good thing since the song wasn't a good match for her. She
reminds me of Lisa Presley. I liked her best last week.

Lucas - Let's Spend the Night Together
The image he's going for is so played out right now. His vocals were
good & I think the song suited him. The comments made about him being
too cocky & arrogant are 100% true. It might be appealing to the band,
but it's not appealing to me especially since it seems he's trying too
hard to be the rock star he's not quite yet become.

Jill - All Right Now
UGH her voice was way too flat. She reminds me of Anastasia. Not a
contender whatsoever in my book.

Ryan - Fortunate Son
He's one I see really getting better as the week's go on. For some
reason he's really appealing to me. It pisses me off they only commented
on his look (contrary to the ladies always getting drooled over) because
he really did a good job with that song. I think he'll pull his way out
of the bottom three (he did).

Phil - White Rabbit
Easily the best performance of the night. 'Nuff said. Newstead seemed
like he didn't want to be bothered when he went over to sing with him.
Not to mention he railed him with the bass. Didn't like that at all.
Then he didn't add any comments after the performance to Phil which was
odd.

Dana - It's My Life
Don't see her lasting much longer unless she can ease out of the country
edge she puts into her singing. Don't see that meshing at all with the
lineups current fan base.

Toby - Runaway Train
Perfect song for his voice. Lackluster stage presence.

Magne - Plush
His best performance so far. Actually enjoyed it. 2nd best of the night
for me. He toned his cockiness down & I think it rubbed off on Lucas
now.

Zayra - Everybody Hurts
Her best so far as well. That will keep her around a little while
longer. (it did)

Jenny - Drive
Love this song! The same exact Lillith Fair comment popped into my head.
Total spinoff of Liz Phair (she doesn't remind me of Poe at all) she was
going for. It wouldn't have been bad either, except her voice got in the
way.

Dilana - Zombie
Seriously! Her voice is so cool when she's not forcing the low scratchy
sound. Enough already. That was like some stage production of a horror
play. I like the parts where she added the soft touches. There was one
part when she leaned back and sounded like she was actually singing & I
think it's time she left her natural voice come out more.

Yeah I'm bored with Lukas already too, but they're not.

Jenny put on a great performance tonight - not the vocals, but
throwing herself around. Still, I knew watching her she was gone.
Y'know why? It seems Rock Star is following the AI model - for those
who are going away, edit the audio so you can't hear the singer!

Josh (or better yet Ryan) should have gone, but after ejecting two
guys the last two weeks, it was girl-be-gone.

Someone give Dana major wardrobe and makeup help, pleeze. She has a
great voice, though of course there is nothing at all about her
appropriate to front Tommy Lee & Co.
