1. Patrice Pike
"Helter Skelter" by the Beatles
It was very striking to me that neither I nor anybody in the room I was with
could recall anything about her previous performances. She does a very
competent job, but she doesn't stand out, in a good or bad way. I can tell
she was trying stand out to here, but still no "wow".
2. Josh Logan
"Come As You Are" by Nirvana
I still remember his performance was great the first week. This week he was
more consistent than last week, and like Patrice all I can say is it was
competent. The difference is I get the impression he's deliberately laying
low to wait out the competition, since it's highly likely he's safe (for
now) and he knows it.
3. Storm Large
"Just What I Needed" by The Cars
Not her best peformance, but she was told to tone it down (most likely by
the producers). Still rocked, and I'll be buying whatever album she's on
after this show's over. (Oh, and I already googled her, the first week.)
4. Lukas Rossi
"Let's Spend the Night Together" by the Rolling Stones
That was pretty bad, even for him. Even though I could hear his voice
through the whole song this time, I didn't understand a word of it. Raising
the bar my ass. He is so one-note.
5. Jill Gioia
"All Right Now" by Free (not Creed)
Competent, again. Still have a bad taste in my mouth from her last week's
performance, though.
6. Ryan Star
"Fortunate Son" by Creedance Clearwater Revival
He was really straining his voice on this one, and it was painfully obvious
he's not used to singing like that. I think I might like it a lot better if
I listened to it again with out watching him. I still think he's trying to
impersonate J.D. Fortune, and not doing a convincing job of it at all.
7. Phil Ritchie
"White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane
That rocked. He's obvious gotten some good coaching, and I wonder if
they're setting him up to be this year's Marty Casey?
For the first time, the rest of Supernova is actually starting to feel like
a real band, with the excited banter between them after Jason performed with
auditioner. Still not convinced it's real, though... certainly not as
genuine as INXS.
8. Dana Andrews
"It's My Life" by Bongiovi
Was she trying to sound like Bon Jovi or Shania Twain? Either way, her
vocals didn't cut it. She just couldn't sustain the big notes and stay on
pitch. Bottom three this week.
9. Toby Rand
"Runway Train" by Soul Asylum
Good ending, but everything before that was boringly average and ho-hum and
didn't really express the emotion he said he was aiming to show us.
10. Magni
"Plush" by Stone Temple Pilots
Another solid performance. Say what you want, he is definitely on par with
the final three from last season.
11. Zayra Alvarez
"Everybody Hurts" by REM
Her accent felt really affected when she was singing the verse. The ending
validated the Bjork comparisons, although she still has a long, long way to
go before she's anything more than potential Bjork (or very early Bjork, at
best).
Call me crazy, but I actually think it'd be cool if they taught her how to
sing and she ended up with the gig. Now *that* would make for interesting
reality tv. Which of course means it'd never happen.
12. Jenny Galt
"Drive" by Incubus
At times she reminds me of the singer Poe, but then that shaky vibrato sets
in, and I'm like ummmm.... I actually digged that Lilith Fair music, but
she's definitely landed herself in the bottom three this week.
13. Dilana
"Zombie" by the Cranberries
If my sister is anything to go by, Cranberries' fans will hate this version
of their song as much as Johnny Cash's hated last week's. It definitely
fits with type of music the members of Supernova do, though.
Unless I was right about her being this year's Jordis, I think they may have
tipped their hand already.
So far this season feels a lot more like American Idol than last year did.
The producer control feels a lot more overt, and a number of singers seem
like pale imitations of last year's (and a few others, oddly, like SNL cast
members).
Who should go this week: Lukas (but he's safe).
Who will go this week: Toss up between Jenny and Dana.
